Failed installation of Win2k SP4: "pci.sys" missing!!
First, edit C:\boot.ini to delete the choice for the failed installation. Boot.ini is a small, simple text file, but it is hidden, system and read-only, so you'll have to remove those attributes first. Then, with Notepad or any other text editor, just delete the line that offers to call that failed copy.

For whatever reason, the installation of the redistributable package failed. You did well and researched the issue, updated MSI and MDAC, and attempted the HP install again. It tried to run DASETUP again. Here's one guess: The initial, failed installation set Registry or TEMP file markers that told it to stop and

Failed install on KB837009
The installation is now 6 months out of date... I've tried downloading the patch and running it locally but it fails with a MessageBox ("The system cannot find the file specified"). I don't know which file can't be found; my analysis of the log file is that several aspects of the installation may have failed.

failed re-installation
About 14MB of files downloaded fine, but the installer couldn't find the file: "pci.sys" and installation failed. The express installer (589KB) obviously didn't download the file. Did anybody have the same problem? Dowloading the whole 130MB is not an option with my 56K connexion. Thanks, M Drissi.

At this point, the best course of action would have been to point back to the driver disk that came with the adapter.
